He is also adapting his new book Marilyn Monroe: My Little Secret into a feature film, is working on a 3rd installment od his ebook trilogy Holly Weird – 5th Grade Drama Tween! , and has a Christmas script in development with Yellow Wood Films called “Lost Claus” that will be released in 2014.
I was lucky enough to receive 2 “Holly Weird” children’s books for review from “Tony Jerris” the author himself. The first is called “Holly Weird: 5th Grade Drama Tween Book 1: Cattle Call” and its about a young girl named Holly being bullied by some of her classmates. Instead of striking back or calling the girls names in return she handles the situations with grace. Holly has a huge imagination, likes to play dress up, and has confidence in spite of her bully’s best efforts. Because of how she handles herself she win casting call for an ad that her bullies also competed for. The person explained to Holly how she was once like Holly and she too was teased in school.
The second book I received for review is “Holly Weird: 5th Grade Drama Tween! Book 2: A Wooly, Anti-Bully Christmas” and its about a girl named Holly who is upset about not being picked to be in a Christmas Play and the kids who were bullying her are. Holly comes up with a plan to sneak into the play as a sheep and comes face to face with one of the girls who likes to tease her at school. She and the girl agree to do a duet for the school. Holly sing wonderfully and the girl pretends to be nice to her in front of the audience and teacher. After the play is over things go back to how they were and the girl returns to her bullying ways.
“Holly Weird: 5th Grade Drama Tween Book 1: Cattle Call” and ”Holly Weird: 5th Grade Drama Tween! Book 2: A Wooly, Anti-Bully Christmas” are super cute books with a powerful message about bullying. They have cute illustrations. They relate to kids who are being bullied in school. Some of us have either been in Holly shoes are we know a girl who has walked in her shoes. Kids can be very cruel and school can be a tough place for kids. It is hard when some kids don’t fit in to the “it crowd”. This could be because of how they look, how they dress, or because they are intelligent or because they are not as intelligent as some kids. Kids stick out of a crowd for many reasons, other kids notice it, and pounce on them trying to destroy their self esteem to make themselves look good. These books are a good example of this.
These books are directed at kids ages 7-11. These books relate to kids being bullied and discourages bullying. These books are books of courage and are not too overpowering for kids.
You can purchase “”Holly Weird: 5th Grade Drama Tween Book 1: Cattle Call” here on Smashwords for $0.99 as an ebook good for many electronic devices and “Holly Weird: 5th Grade Drama Tween! Book 2: A Wooly, Anti-Bully Christmas” is free here on Smashwords as an ebook good for many electronic devices.
Would I recommend this book? Yes because my children loved both “Holly Weird” books. My daughter really liked the title “Holly Weird”. She thought it was funny. She felt bad for Holly. I explained when I read the book about treating others how you want to be treated and that when we are mean to people it hurts their feelings like it did Holly’s. I also explained how just because people are mean to you that like Holly you don’t have to sink to their level. It had some very powerful points I was able to help my kids understand.
I give this adorable children’s book three stars!
